Rosa Wilder is back in Oberwies with her son Tim. She has left the police force and is looking after her father, who is ill. That is until village police officer Betschart suffers what looks like a fatal accident. It quickly transpires, however, that he was beaten to death beforehand. After some initial reticence, Rosa agrees to help in the investigation. Particularly because it is being led by Kägi. And Rosa is delighted to get to work with such a decent police officer again.
Thomas Zingg quickly becomes a person of interest in the investigation: the night previously he had caused a fight in the local "Sonne" restaurant and had afterwards argued with the dead policeman. In her search for Zingg, Rosa finds bloody clothes in his office, while he himself has disappeared without a trace. Not even his ex-wife Nora has any idea where he is. A warrant is issued for his arrest. What did Zingg have to do with the murder of village police officer Betschart?
In the meantime, Robert Räber and his son, Dani, have altogether different problems. On the night of the incident, someone broke into their offices. It turns out that along with some cash, they also got away with a number of highly sensitive documents. It is these that are making Robert particularly nervous. Is he involved in some sort of shady dealings again? What no-one suspects is that the person behind the break-in is someone they trust implicitly.
Elsewhere, Elias, brother of village schoolteacher Isabelle, has also attracted the attention of the detectives. Isabelle had been married to the murdered Betschart. Elias suffered a cognitive impairment as a result of a climbing accident and no longer speaks. He behaves oddly, watches the police at the accident site, waves at his mother Charlotte, who drives the post van and even in winter, goes diving in the lake for stones on which he paints faces. And on the evening when Betschart was murdered, he was also in the village inn.
