After the suicide of a convicted murderer in prison, another man comes forward and confesses to the crime. Chief Inspector Hanns von Meuffels must wrestle with the questions of guilt and blame, suffering intense emotional distress in the process.
Tim Haffling, who for almost ten years has been serving a life sentence for the murder of 16-year old Miriam, commits suicide in his cell. Suddenly, a man called Jens Baumann arrives to see Chief Inspector Hanns von Meuffels to confess to the crime for which Haffling was sentenced. It was Hanns von Meuffels who had conducted the original investigation into the case, and even though the young girl's body was never found everything pointed to Haffling being guilty. The detective believes that Baumann is simply attention-seeking, refuses to meet with him and is concerned about Baumann's mental health. Baumann insists however that he is the true murderer and wants to be punished. When von Meuffels' hand is finally forced and he goes to the place where Baumann says he buried Miriam's body, the sniffer dogs find nothing. His doubts appear to be confirmed. But then Baumann provides further details about the victim and von Meuffels decides to re-open the cold case. With that he sets out on his own difficult and humiliating path to the truth.
